WONC music night

Students looking to relax and enjoy local music while supporting a good cause can look forward to the WONC-sponsored local music nights. Taking place every Tuesday night at the Boilerhouse Café from 8-10 p.m., these shows feature performances and art from local artists.
Every week features a different artist and theme that is announced during the WONC broadcast from 6-8 p.m.
The artists playing that night are interviewed during the broadcast and often play a few songs live on the air.
Tuesday’s show was a special Valentine’s Day event featuring games and a raffle with proceeds going toward ADOPT. Students could buy tickets to play board games or enter the raffle.
The raffle was organized by Allison Pileggi, ’13, Elise Baron, ’12, Hannah Holota, ’15, and Matt Colbert, ’15 for a group processing class. Colbert also performed that night with Amy Zoglauer.
The main act consisted of Zoglauer on acoustic guitar and vocals and Colbert on percussion.
The two have been playing together for three and a half years. Zoglauer’s music is influenced by The Beatles and contemporary artists such as KT Tunstall.
The next act of the night featured Leroy Barncord singing and playing guitar. Barncord, the art director at Community Christian Church at Wentz Hall, plays with Colbert during Sunday services. Colbert also played percussion during Barncord’s set.
The night opened and closed with short sets by local artist and North Central graduate Mike “K-Nein” Krieglstein, ’10. According to WONC Promotional Director Jenna Heerdt ’12, K-Nein is going to be a part of future WONC music nights.
“K-Nein is a real creative force; he just has a mind of his own,” Heerdt said. “We’re going to have him as a recurring part of our events.”
The previous week’s show was the first show that K-Nein organized.
Inspired by a trip to China that K-Nein took with his father, Dr. Werner Krieglstein, and longtime friend Matt Kopecky, the show ran from 9-11 p.m. instead of the normal 8-10 p.m. time slot.
Included in the show was a gallery of pictures from the trip and music inspired by the trip.
K-Nein was encouraged to go to China by Krieglstein, retired philosophy professor who taught at College of DuPage.
Krieglstien is also a published author in philosophy. Krieglstein suggested that they all travel to China after his first trip where he lectured on aesthetics and the place of philosophy in art.
“The funny thing about the China trip was that we planned it before we even knew it was possible,” K-Nein said between songs. “Sometimes that would end badly, but in this case, it ended up being the best possible way to do it.”
Kopecky, who is very active in the local music scene, played percussion for K-Nein and also played a set with Zach Biggs. Biggs and Kopecky are part of the group Oblio and Arrow and played acoustic versions of the group’s songs.
“Shows like this are a great way to raise awareness of local music,” Biggs said.
The events vary from week to week based on what the artists want. “It’s usually up to the artists to set up the content of the night,” Heerdt said.
The artists performing each week either contact WONC to set up a show, although Heerdt and Assistant Promotions Director Andy Taylor ’13 also occasionally invite artists that they like.
Musicians who wish to perform at the WONC-sponsored music nights can reach the promotions department by emailing wonc_promo@wonc.org.
